Matter Technology

Matter is the new smart home standard that brings interoperability, simplicity, reliability, and security to the smart home, allowing devices, regardless of brand,  to finally and simply connect and work with each other, and be controlled by any device, app, or voice assistant, regardless of which platform or operating system you use. It was created by the members of the Connectivity Standards Alliance, where  nearly 300 global companies developed and are now adopting this standard. So far, 500 products have been certified with Matter from leading brands like Amazon, Apple, Eve Home, Google, Samsung SmartThings, Schneider Electric, and Tuya.

Matter will be available in products across categories such as sensors, lighting, outlets and plugs, blinds and shades, thermostats, door locks, TVs and media devices, and control devices, such as smart speakers and home control “hubs”. Future updates to Matter will add new features and categories including appliances, robot vacuums, energy management and EV charging, cameras, garage doors and gates, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Matter makes smart home devices easier to buy for consumers as they can now choose the products that best fit their needs, regardless of what platform, smartphone, app, or voice assistant they have. Just ask for Matter or look for the Matter logo at retailers and online. Even better, tens of millions of products already in people’s homes can or will be able to be upgraded to support Matter.

Matter makes smart home products easier to set up and use, with a uniform set up process starting with a QR code that lets people easily add new products to their Matter smart home systems.

Matter also raises the bar for security, validating every device before allowing it to join your home network encrypting messages between devices, enabling local control (no cloud), and including a pathway to over-the-air security updates.

Companies at CES, from startups to the large tech brands, representing dozens of countries, are showing off or announcing Matter products or Matter product plans. In addition to upgrades, we expect to see new products featuring Matter built-in debut in 2023 to consumers around the world.

The smart home has had slower than expected adoption by the mass market  due to the often fragmented and complicated process of buying, setting up, adding to and reliably using products in one’s home network. To address some of the biggest challenges to adoption, many of the world’s leading technology and smart home brands came together to establish a new, standardized baseline - addressing interoperability between devices, set-up, security, and command and control functions.  Through this, Matter was created to unlock the potential of the smart home.

Matter will raise the bar on interoperability, simplicity and security, and will give consumers confidence in their purchase, their ability to control their home, and enjoy the promised conveniences. Matter’s use by smart home platforms and product providers worldwide will continue to expand over time with new features, security updates, and support for an evolving range of device types and categories.

In the coming year, Matter will quickly evolve from a new standard with momentum to mass adoption across existing devices in people’s homes and in new products coming to market and on store shelves. There have been 500 products certified to date from leading brands including Amazon, Apple, Eve Home,

Google, Samsung SmartThings, Schneider Electric, Tuya , and more, with many, many more expected throughout the year — and around the globe. Matter will simply make the smart home better.
